Rome ReMMIX
I’m posting my paintings from our final EHP show. I originally did three paintings for the show, but decided to include only these two as a diptych. The title of the show was Rhode Island School of Design European Honors Program Final Exhibition Spring 2009, but note that the title of this blog post is Rome ReMMIX (and don’t you forget it!).
The statement I probably should have prepared before the show, but oh well
It’s easy to develop a false sense of emotional strength in believing that no memory, thought, feeling, or impulse is repressed — that you are fully comfortable with your past and therefore, yourself — and to chastise others who are not so fortunate. It takes an act of trauma to understand that repression is a natural defense mechanism each and every one of us is capable of. The instinct to repress can sometimes be at odds with our eagerness to grow and experience new, elevated planes of emotion. To navigate these conflicting impulses carefully and deliberately shows great maturity, but can breed existential crises. Ultimately it takes a mature understanding of the reality of ones situation, and a commitment to moving forward. Repression then becomes a tool, though far more powerful in one’s own hands than left up to instinct.

Eventually I will add either a paintings section (the original plan) or just a general fine arts/etc section to the portfolio which will include these.
